Shootout at Missouri motel: One officer killed another wounded

A gunman killed one police officer and wounded another in a shooting at a Missouri motel in Bonne Terre. The injured officer was airlifted to the hospital in St. Louis. After the man opened fire, the officers retaliated, and the man was shot and killed. Later, the deceased was identified as 21-year-old James Emery, a resident of St. Louis.

As per Missouri state troopers, a man was creating a disturbance in Motel 6 in Bonne Terre and opened fire on two Bonne Terre police officers on early Thursday. After the nuisance in the motel was reported at about 12:24 a.m., two officers were sent to the motel. As soon as the officers reached, a man came out of his motel room and started shooting at them, stated Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson.

According to the reports, the deceased police officer is identified as Patrolman Lane Burns. He had joined the Bonne Terre Police team nearly five years ago and was in his early 30s. While the second officer, Cpl. Garrett Worley (28), injured by the bullet shot in his leg, had joined the department almost seven years ago. The Bonne Terre Police Department has requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol to take charge of the current investigation.
