After 'Shogun' arrived on FX and Hulu on February 27, 2024, it got more than 9 million views in six days across Hulu, Disney+, and Star+, reports 'Screenrant'. With this, the historic epic depicting seventeenth-century feudal Japan became the number one premiere of an FX series on Hulu in the U.S. ahead of 'The Bear Season 2' and 'The Kardashians' Season 1. Film critics, analysts and fans have praised the FX series for its attention to detail, artistic cinematography and complex characters.

'Shogun' has also been praised for tackling of broad political ideas and the depth and level of sophistication in its treatment of the subject and the subtle message it sent. It got 99% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 79 reviews and an audience score of 94% with 250 reviews. Variety's Allison Herman called it a "thrillingly transportive event on TV." It has also been received well and praised in Japan and the US for its cinematic quality and authentic representation of Japanese culture.
