According to Daily Mail, the pair, who had been out of public view for two weeks, were found half-mummified, with evidence of decomposition on their bodies. Even an open prescription bottle of pills was found on the bathroom counter and a space heater beside Arakawa's head, which investigators claimed may have fallen, as per the report. It is uncertain if they had been prescribed for her or Hackman.
The discovery of the dead bodies
The Daily Mail reported that maintenance workers Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler had discovered the bodies of Hackman, 94, and Arakawa, 64, at 1:46 p.m. on Wednesday. The couple's $3.3 million mansion had been quiet for a while, and Begay and Kesler told investigators they hadn't seen them for two weeks, reported Daily Mail.Arakawa was discovered on the bathroom floor, with her face showing signs of bloating, and her feet and hands visibly mummified.
Hackman was found in a mudroom off the kitchen, dressed in his clothes with his sunglasses found near his body, indicating he may have died of a sudden fall, as per the report.
According to the evidence, both appear to have been dead for some time, reported Daily Mail.
A possible carbon monoxide leak?
Gene Hackman's daughter, Elizabeth, had theorized that a carbon monoxide leak could have killed her father and stepmother, as per Daily Mail. Fire department officials, however, found no signs of a gas leak, as per the report.While, one of the couple's three dogs, a German Shepherd, was discovered dead close to Arakawa. Two other dogs, however, were unharmed. One of the surviving dogs was found alive close to Betsy's body, with a second roaming the property, reported Daily Mail.
