The availability of the series' major actors is the main barrier to bringing Sherlock Holmes back to the screen, according to co-creator Steven Moffat of the BBC TV adaptation. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the 2010–2017 series stars Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Victorian and Edwardian settings, the series departed to take place in modern-day London, as reported by Metro.co.uk.

Popularity and critical approval

Sherlock ran for four seasons, releasing thirteen episodes, and won praise from critics all around the world. It received nominations for major honors such as a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and an Emmy. Since 2001, the third season has been the most-watched drama series in the UK. The show has not shown new episodes since the 2017 season 4 finale, despite its success. The fans are still hoping for a sequel, a movie, or another season.

Support from Moffat

As per the reports of 'Metro.co.uk', 62-year-old Steven Moffat has continuously shown support for going back to the project. He highlights the 60 novels written by Arthur Conan Doyle as evidence of the character's continuing popularity and the format's everlasting appeal. He remarked, "I'd love to do it again," highlighting the fact that Sherlock Holmes is never tired. But Moffat noted that convincing Cumberbatch and Freeman to participate—both of whom have busy schedules—remains the primary obstacle.

Challenges and willingness of stars

As reported by Metro.co.uk, while expressing interest in playing the same character again, Benedict Cumberbatch made it clear that the time has to be right. He hinted at it in a recent interview, saying that they never rule anything out even if it isn't announced there. But in a 2022 interview, he said that it was difficult to arrange a return because of their respective hectic schedules.

Co-creator and series actor Mark Gatiss, who also portrayed Mycroft Holmes, talked about the possibility of a return. When asked if there will be a fifth season, he said that Cumberbatch and Freeman's schedules would be the main factor. Reuniting the actors would present logistical hurdles, although Gatiss indicated an interest in directing a movie.
