After a shooting near Stockton University in Galloway Township, police issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place order, turning a calm afternoon into a tense one.

What led to Stockton University's shelter-in-place?



The order, according to the university, is in place because of the ongoing police investigation. Someone shot a woman in the face, according to the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office. Her condition was listed as stable after she was brought to the hospital.



About 1:19 p.m., the university's website announced the following alert: "Shelter in place at Galloway Campus. If outside, seek shelter indoors. Remain inside for your safety. Do not exit until Public Safety issues all-clear."

"Continue sheltering in place due to an ongoing police investigation on the Galloway campus,” a few minutes later, the university posted.


What was the response of the police to the shooting?


Just after 1 p.m., the Galloway Township Police Department posted on Facebook that they were looking into a shooting that occurred at 12:52 p.m. on West Jimmie Leeds Road close to Redwood Avenue. Near the university's entrance is the location, as per a report by CBS News.

Two suspects in a white sedan were spotted driving north through campus at 2:05 p.m., according to the university, and police are looking for them. According to the university, at Jimmie Leeds Road, the vehicle crossed into Vera King Farris Drive.

Although they haven't found the SUV, police think they have a potential tag number. Police want to make sure the campus is safe before granting the all-clear.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., the university declared that the Galloway Campus would remain under a shelter-in-place until the Stockton police gave their all-clear. People who were outside were instructed to take refuge.

Also, all classes and events for the rest of the day are cancelled, and they advise against coming to campus, as per a report by CBS News.

However, no information was provided about the shooting or any injuries related to it. The threat's nature is still unknown.
