Former NFL star Shannon Sharpe has been formally accused of sexual assault and battery in a multimillion dollar lawsuit. The accusations have been levelled by a woman who has alleged that she was raped by the sports commentator multiple times in late 2024 and early 2025. The victim has claimed that she was in a long-term abusive relationship, the nature of which has been described in the lawsuit as "rocky".

Shannon Sharpe rape case: Victim's claims

The duo met at a gym in Los Angeles in 2023, according to Page Six, which has accessed court documents related to the case. The plaintiff's filing reportedly suggests that she was 20 years old and Sharpe was in his mid-50s when they met. As per reports, she has claimed that he made promises to her during their first interaction. The lawsuit claims that Sharpe later took to aggressively pursuing her by means of calls, text and by "demanding she come to his Beverly Glen mansion", as per Page Six.

The woman and the legendary NFL retiree eventually entered into a consensual relationship, the latter has claimed. However, Sharpe allegedly began being controlling. It has been mentioned that he was also verbally abusive.

"He demanded complete control over her time and body, expecting her to be at his house on his schedule, at his command, whenever he called," attorney Tony Buzbee wrote in the documents, Page Six reported. The formal accusation against the legendary NFL retiree was made in Nevada on Sunday.

The woman has also mentioned an alleged instance when, as per her claims, she came down with fright during an explosive argument with Sharpe. The NFL legend allegedly had a firearm in the room during the incident. The court filing claims that she tried to share her location with her friends during the alleged confrontation.

The court documents claim that Sharpe allegedly "grabbed her by the neck" when he realised what she was doing during the above mentioned incident. He allegedly threatened her with her life and said would face consequences if she ever tried to 'do that again'. The woman claims that she started distancing herself from him after the incident. However, the attempt to end the relationship led to Sharpe raping her. The allegations mention that the victim was raped on several occasions, with sexual assault and physical harm involved.

The lawsuit has claimed $50 million in damages from the former NFL player. The woman's complaint spans 13 pages and was filed in a state court.
