Shane MacGowan's crazy bond with Johnny Depp – from adoring actor to charming wedding present

Shane MacGowan and Johnny Depp have known each other for almost three decades.

When the two first met more than three decades ago, the Hollywood actor quickly "fell in love" with The Pogues frontman. Shane, a biopic Johnny made for singer-songwriter Shane, focused on ‘The Pogues' frontman's journey to popularity and battles with substance addiction.

"When I met Shane, he was negotiating a pool table," Depp recounted at the documentary's presentation at the San Sebastian Film Festival.


"There was a drink in this hand, a pint, and in this hand there was a guitar," he went on to say. "And he was teetering, balancing back and forth, unsure which way to fall. I stood there for almost 15 minutes watching him do that."

He went on to say: "Then I was introduced to him, before he fell, and from that moment on you just knew… there are moments in life when you know this will happen one time and one time only, when you get the opportunity to spend time with greatness."

Depp mentioned that he can only say that he fell in love with him(Shane MacGowan). “the moment I met him and that I still do,” he said.

Johnny thinks MacGowen’s wife Victoria is a wonderful partner and that they're best friends, and Johnny has seen that over these many years under all kinds of situations.

Shane and The Popes performed their smash song 'That Woman's Got Me Drinking' on Top Of The Pops with Johnny on guitar in 1994, and the pair share a love of music. Johnny played the guitar and serenaded Shane and his wife Victoria Mary Clarke at their wedding in Copenhagen in 2018.

Earlier this year, Victoria and Shane paid a touching birthday tribute to the Hollywood star, revealing that they "worshiped" him.

"Happy birthday, beautiful @johnnydepp!" she wrote beside a photo of the actor.

We're so thrilled this lovely dude is having fun doing what he loves, and we're so proud of him for everything he's brought into our lives and the globe.

Victoria said that JD is now redefining what it is to be 60, and 20-year-olds have no chance. She said that they adore this man from the tips of his ears to the tips of his toes, and that they are grateful to have benefited from so much of his wonderful energy in so many ways that they cannot reasonably enumerate.
