Renowned Colombian singer Shakira, a Grammy-winning artist and global music sensation, has been honored with a monumental bronze statue capturing her iconic belly-dancing pose in her hometown of Barranquilla.

Mayor Jaime Pumarejo revealed the impressive 6.5-meter (21-foot) sculpture on the banks of the Magdalena River, joined by the singer's parents for the unveiling ceremony.

Crafted by artist Yino Marquez, the statue portrays Shakira in her signature belly-dancing stance, with long, curly hair and arms raised overhead, adorned in a sheer skirt with gleaming aluminum embellishments.

Mayor Pumarejo emphasized the statue's significance, stating that it serves as inspiration for countless girls, showcasing that they can pursue their dreams and achieve anything. He fondly recalled watching Shakira perform at local children's concerts in her early days.

The plaque accompanying the statue pays tribute to Shakira's achievements, including her three Latin Grammy Awards in 2023, and highlights her charitable efforts through "Pies descalzos" (Bare Feet), dedicated to early childhood development.

Describing Shakira as having "a heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses, and feet that march for the good of children and humanity," the plaque echoes the multifaceted impact of the artist.

Despite residing in Miami, Shakira expressed her gratitude for the statue, affirming that Barranquilla will always be her home. She personally commended Marquez, acknowledging that he captured her essence flawlessly in the sculpture. According to Marquez, Shakira's son praised the artwork as the most beautiful sculpture he had ever seen.

Yino Marquez, a 52-year-old artist with a prolific career in sculpting since the age of 16, revealed that the mayor approached him a year ago for this project. The decision to honor significant figures from Barranquilla, including Shakira, aimed to boost tourism and provide role models for the city's youth. Shakira herself endorsed the idea when approached by Mayor Pumarejo about the statue, becoming an integral part of Barranquilla's cultural legacy.
