Forecasters warned the storms could bring frequent lightning, quarter-sized hail, and wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph.
Earlier in the day, the NWS noted the approaching cold front would serve as the trigger for developing showers and thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening.
"The front will be a mechanism to develop showers and thunderstorms later this afternoon into the evening," the weather service stated. "Continue to monitor the latest weather conditions and be prepared for the potential of rapidly changing weather conditions."
The NWS expects the storms to exit Connecticut late Sunday night.
A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for parts of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont until 9 p.m. EDT.
Monday and Tuesday will bring abundant sunshine and comfortably low humidity. Temperatures are expected to stay slightly below seasonal averages, with highs around 80 degrees.
However, muggy conditions are anticipated to return by the end of the week.
