Severe thunderstorm watch issued for 11 states; one of season’s broadest, sweeping Northeast and Mid-Atlantic until 8 pm Saturday

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 607, in effect until 8:00 p.m. EDT Saturday, covering a broad swath of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

In one of the most extensive watches in recent times, this weather event comprises 11 states, multiple counties, and adjacent coastal waters, making it one of the most wide-ranging severe thunderstorm watches of the season. Forecasters warn of the potential for damaging winds, heavy rain, and dangerous lightning across densely populated areas stretching from Maryland to Maine.

In an X post NWS Severe Tstorm also posted the update, ‘A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of CT, DE, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT until 8 PM EDT.’

In Massachusetts, the watch includes Berkshire, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Worcester counties.

New Jersey is almost entirely under alert, with Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties affected.

In Connecticut, Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, Tolland, and Windham counties are included.

The watch also extends into Maryland, where Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, Howard, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties are listed, along with the Independent City of Baltimore.

In Maine, coverage includes Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Waldo, and York counties.

Neighboring New Hampshire is under the watch in Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford, and Sullivan counties.

Across New York, the affected areas include the Bronx, Columbia, Dutchess, Kings (Brooklyn), Nassau, New York (Manhattan), Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Rockland, and Westchester counties.

In Pennsylvania, Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and York counties are included.

The state of Delaware is covered with Kent and New Castle counties, while Rhode Island is affected in Providence County and Vermont in Windham County.

The watch also covers several coastal waters, including Casco Bay in Maine; the stretch from Cape Elizabeth, ME, to the Merrimack River, MA; Boston Harbor; Massachusetts Bay and Ipswich Bay; Long Island Sound west of New Haven, CT, to Port Jefferson, NY; New York Harbor; and Delaware Bay waters north of East Point, NJ, to Slaughter Beach, DE.

In addition, sections of the Chesapeake Bay from north of Pooles Island to North Beach, MD, are under the watch. Other affected waterways include the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor, the Chester River to Queenstown, MD, and Eastern Bay.
