At least seven people have lost their lives in a massive 158-car pile-up, near New Orleans. The tragic event was triggered by a dense and peculiar weather phenomenon known as a "super fog," which severely impacted visibility for commuters on Monday.

The mishap unfolded on Interstate 55 in St John the Baptist Parish, resulting in injuries to twenty-five individuals, with concerns that the death toll may rise as more information becomes available. The perilous conditions were exacerbated by a combination of thick fog and fumes emanating from multiple marsh fires, creating an extremely hazardous environment for drivers.

Several vehicles involved in the accident caught fire and were subsequently abandoned, leaving behind a scene of charred wreckage and twisted metal. Authorities have taken swift action, with the police announcing the closure of the affected motorway until at least midday on Tuesday.

Lt. Melissa Matey provided insight into the situation, stating, "A portion of the crash scene caught on fire shortly after the initial incident. One tanker truck carrying a hazardous liquid is being off-loaded due to a compromised tank/trailer." Despite the chaos, some fortunate individuals narrowly escaped peril. One car veered off the road and into the water, but the driver was successfully rescued, as reported by police to WWL-TV.

Mike Tregre, the sheriff of St John the Baptist Parish, estimated that approximately 100 people were left stranded. To aid them, school buses were mobilized to transport these individuals to their intended destinations.

Clarencia Patterson Reed, who was on her way to Hammond, recounted her harrowing experience during the pile-up. She mentioned, "It was 'Boom. Boom.' All you kept hearing was crashing for at least 30 minutes." While she managed to exit her vehicle unharmed, her wife was not as fortunate and sustained injuries in the ordeal.

The National Weather Service in New Orleans characterized this unusual weather occurrence as a "super fog." They explained that such conditions can arise when a mixture of smoke and moisture from damp, smoldering vegetation mingles with cooler air.

The National Weather Service has also issued a cautionary statement, indicating that similarly dangerous weather conditions may persist later in the week, urging residents to exercise utmost caution and stay informed.
