Setti D. Warren, director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics (IOP) and former mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, October 2 at 55.

Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy M. Weinstein and Harvard College Dean David J. Deming announced his death in a message to the university community, describing Warren as a “visionary and tireless leader” who was deeply committed to public service and fostering open debate on campus.

“It’s often said that the measure of a person’s life is found in their service to others — and by that standard, Setti’s life stands as an example to us all,” the deans wrote.

Harvard Kennedy School paid tribute on X, saying, “It's with profound sadness we share that Setti Warren, Director of the Institute of Politics, has passed away.”

Who was Setti D. Warren

Warren made history as the first popularly elected African American mayor in Massachusetts, serving two terms in Newton from 2010 to 2018. His career spanned public service at every level, including roles in the White House, at FEMA’s New England operations, and as a naval intelligence specialist during the Iraq War.

In 2017, Warren decided to run for governor of Massachusetts instead of a third term as mayor. Warren supported free public college tuition and a single-payer healthcare system during his campaign. Citing financial limitations, he withdrew six months prior to the election.

At Harvard, Warren led the Institute of Politics and previously served as executive director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy.

Weinstein and Deming said he would be remembered for guiding both institutions through a period of vibrant debate, research, and student engagement. “Setti’s students loved him, and their impact — like his — will reverberate for generations to come,” the message read.

A devout Catholic, Warren often spoke about the role of faith and social justice in leadership. “Whenever he saw a challenge, he ran toward it — not away from it — and our university and country are better for it,” the deans said.
