September Social Security SSI payment worth up to $967 lands today, August 29, arriving early due to Labor Day. Millions of seniors, disabled Americans, and low-income recipients will see deposits ahead of schedule.
Millions of Americans are waking up to good news: September Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments worth up to $967 are being deposited today, Friday, August 29.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) typically sends SSI on the first day of each month. But since September 1 lands on Labor Day weekend, the agency issued payments one business day early.

This adjustment is automatic, part of a long-standing SSA rule: if the payment date falls on a holiday or weekend, checks go out the previous business day.

Who qualifies for the September SSI payment?

SSI provides monthly support to people with limited income and resources. It primarily covers:

  • Adults 65 and older with little to no income

  • People who are blind or visually impaired

  • Individuals with a qualifying disability

But qualifying isn’t just about age or disability status. The SSA also requires recipients to meet additional conditions:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen under Department of Homeland Security classifications

  • Must live in the 50 states, Washington, D.C., or the Northern Mariana Islands

  • Cannot remain outside the U.S. for a full calendar month or 30 consecutive days

How much money are recipients getting today?

The maximum SSI payment depends on filing status:

  • Individuals: up to $967

  • Couples filing jointly: up to $1,450

  • Essential caregivers: up to $484

Earlier this year, benefits were boosted by a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to protect recipients against rising inflation.

Why this month’s SSI schedule is different

September is unusual for SSI recipients. Because the September 1 payment was moved to August 29, there will be no separate SSI check in September.

This same pattern happens several times in 2025:

  • August: Two SSI payments (Aug. 1 and Aug. 29)

  • October & December: Two SSI payments

  • September & November: No SSI payments

  • January 2026: No SSI payment (covered by the Dec. 2025 deposit)

Understanding this cycle is critical, especially for families that rely on SSI to pay rent, utilities, and groceries. Missing a month doesn’t mean the check was skipped — it was simply paid early.

When will Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor benefits arrive?

SSI is not the only benefit with strict timing. For Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), and survivor benefits, payments are tied to your birth date:

  • Born 1st–10th of the month → Paid on the second Wednesday

  • Born 11th–20th → Paid on the third Wednesday

  • Born 21st–31st → Paid on the fourth Wednesday

For example, in September 2025:

  • Sept. 10: Payments for birthdays on the 1st–10th

  • Sept. 17: Payments for birthdays on the 11th–20th

  • Sept. 24: Payments for birthdays on the 21st–31st

This structure ensures deposits are spread evenly throughout the month. If your scheduled Wednesday falls on a holiday, your payment will arrive the day before.

Why this calendar matters for 2025

For the over 70 million Americans who depend on Social Security and SSI, the exact timing of payments is more than a technicality. It affects budgeting, rent deadlines, bill payments, and even grocery trips.

With inflation still pressuring household finances, understanding the payment schedule helps families avoid overdraft fees, missed bills, or cash-flow stress.
