Lawmakers from US Senate chamber unanimously passed resolution designating October 14 as National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk following conservative activist's assassination
The US Senate unanimously approved Thursday, September 18, a resolution designating October 14 as the "National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk." The date corresponds to the late conservative activist's birthday, who would have turned 32 this year.

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott introduced the resolution Tuesday alongside Florida GOP Representative Jimmy Patronis in the House. The bipartisan measure honors Charlie Kirk's legacy and influence in conservative politics following his assassination at Utah Valley University.

Scott emphasized Charlie Kirk's impact on American political discourse and conservative activism in his statement supporting the resolution. The Florida senator highlighted Kirk's role as founder of Turning Point USA and his influence on young conservative voters.

"Charlie was a magnetic leader, a loving father and husband, and a friend and inspiration to so many. His loss is devastating, and I'll always cherish the friendship I had with him," Scott said in a statement. "Charlie loved our nation and its founding principles and believed deeply in his faith, in his family, and in beauty of ideas and discussion."

The memorial resolution comes one week after Charlie Kirk was killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. The shooting shocked the conservative political community and prompted nationwide discussions about political violence and security at campus events.

"Charlie worked to make our nation a better place in his 31 years before he was lost in an evil act of political violence, and will leave a lasting legacy on our nation," Scott continued. "We know what Charlie would want us to do: he'd want us to stand strong by the ideas we believe in, have discussions, carry on with hope, strength and courage, and look to God for guidance."

National Day of Remembrance aims to celebrate Charlie Kirk's conservative impact

The designated remembrance day will provide an annual opportunity to recognize Charlie Kirk's contributions to conservative politics and youth activism. Scott described the memorial as a chance for Americans to reflect on Kirk's influence and continue his political mission.

"I am proud to lead a resolution honoring Charlie's legacy as an American patriot by designating October 14th, what would have been his 32nd birthday, as National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk – a day to come together, pray, and celebrate Charlie's impact on the nation," Scott added.

House resolution expected to follow senate's unanimous approval

Representative Jimmy Patronis introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives, where similar unanimous passage is anticipated. The resolution requires approval from both chambers of Congress before becoming official federal recognition.
