Authorities in Idaho are looking into a video that allegedly shows convicted murderer Bryan Kohberger in his prison cell that has been going around online. The video, which was reportedly shot from above, has raised questions about a possible security breach and whether prison staff were involved in leaking it.

The Idaho Department of Correction says it can't be sure that the video is real, but it does say that it could be a big policy violation. Kohberger is still in "J Block," where he is being held in strict isolation, as per a report by Fox News.

How did the video of Kohberger in prison get online?

Idaho is investigating an online video purportedly featuring Bryan Kohberger in his maximum-security prison cell. It looks like the short video shows him putting something on a shelf, but officials say it hasn't been verified yet.

The video, which is said to have been shot from above, quickly went viral on social media, leading people to wonder how it could have been filmed in one of the state's most closely watched prison blocks.

What has the Idaho Department of Corrections said?

The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) said it is looking into the matter, but it told the public not to assume that the video is real. Officials said that if the clip is real, it would be a "clear violation" of prison rules.

The department said in a statement, "We are aware of the videos circulating online and are investigating the matter." "While we cannot yet confirm the veracity of the videos, if verified, they are a clear violation of IDOC policy and the parties responsible will be held accountable, up to and including termination,” as per a report by Fox News.

Officials also said that in today's digital world, it's possible to make fake clips like these. An email recently reminded employees of the rules about professionalism and social media use in prison.

The department also said, "Videotaping and publicly sharing security footage is prohibited conduct and we will be reviewing all legal options, including criminal prosecution.”

How is Kohberger being kept in prison?

Kohberger, who is 29 years old, is serving four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022. He is in prison at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, where he is housed in "J Block," which is for high-risk offenders, as per a report by Fox News.

Prison records show Kohberger is alone in a single cell most of the time. He can only be outside for an hour a day, and someone has to watch him closely.

The video that got out came out just a few days after reports said that Kohberger had complained about other inmates yelling at him through vents. Chris McDonough, a former detective, told reporters that prisoners were "taking turns tormenting him,” as per a report by Fox News.

An Idaho Department of Corrections spokesperson told NewsNation, "We are aware of Kohberger’s complaints about what he considers taunting."

According to the spokesperson, "Incarcerated individuals commonly communicate with each other in prison," "Bryan Kohberger is housed alone in a cell, and IDOC security staff maintain a safe and orderly environment for all individuals in our custody."
