Second December SSI check coming in days — some Americans to get up to $4,544
Millions of Americans will get a second payment soon, as December brings two major benefit payments for some people. Some people could receive up to $4,544, because of a small change in the December payment schedule. The extra money comes during an expensive holiday season, helping people who depend on monthly government benefits. More than 6.5 million US veterans are included, as they rely on disability payments from the government, as reported by The Sun.

The payment date changed this year. Veterans are usually paid on the last day of the month. But November 30 was on a weekend. So the payment was moved to December 1. Because of this change, veterans will get two payments in December. One payment comes on December 1, and the second payment comes on December 31.

Double VA payments in December

The Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed this schedule change, and said both payments will be tax-free. These benefits are for veterans injured or made sick because of military service, including conditions worsened by service.

Covered health problems include chronic back pain, lung issues, hearing loss, mobility problems, and cancers from toxic exposure. Mental health conditions also qualify, such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and traumatic brain injuries, as stated in the report by The Sun. Conditions linked to military sexual trauma are included as well.

How much veterans can get

Some family members can also receive benefits, including surviving spouses, dependent children, and sometimes parents. Payment amounts depend on how serious the disability is, using a government rating system. Veterans with higher or multiple disabilities get more money, under this rating system.

A veteran with a 10% disability rating gets $175.51 per month in 2025. A 20% disability rating raises the payment to $346.95 per month, as noted in the report by The Sun. Veterans with a 100% disability rating can receive up to $4,544.23 per month. The highest amount usually goes to veterans with a spouse, a child, and two dependent parents.

Second SSI check explained

More than 75 million Americans depend on Social Security payments to manage monthly expenses. Many people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will also get two payments in December.

SSI payments usually arrive on the first of each month, but January 1 is a federal holiday, as stated by The Sun report. Because of New Year’s Day, the January SSI payment will be sent early on December 31. SSI helps older adults with low income and people with disabilities, giving them important monthly financial support.
