Ghostface looms in the first “Scream 7” trailer as fans reignite backlash over Melissa Barrera’s firing from the franchise amid her pro-Palestine remarks, sparking a renewed boycott against Spyglass Media.
The Scream 7 trailer has reignited outrage over Melissa Barrera’s 2023 dismissal, with fans and advocacy groups accusing Spyglass of silencing pro-Palestinian voices. Nearly two years after Scream star Melissa Barrera was fired from the horror franchise, the newly released Scream 7 trailer has reopened old wounds, and triggered a fierce backlash.

Fans swarmed social media within hours of the trailer’s debut, condemning Spyglass Media for removing Barrera in 2023 over her posts criticizing the “atrocities being committed against Palestinians.” Spyglass defended its decision at the time, citing “zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech,” but the controversy has since grown into a full-blown movement against the studio.

Online users declared that the new sequel feels hollow without Barrera and co-star Jenna Ortega, who left shortly after her firing. “This is missing two very important women…” one fan posted on X, while another shared a still from Scream VI captioned, “Where the franchise ended for me.”

Boycott calls grow louder as advocacy groups join in

The backlash has now evolved into a coordinated campaign. The Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement has urged moviegoers to skip the film entirely, joined by 22 arts and advocacy groups accusing Spyglass of punishing an actress for her political stance.

Across social media, fans are redirecting support toward Barrera’s other projects, including Your Monster (streaming on HBO Max and Hulu) and her upcoming film The Copenhagen Test, set to premiere on December 27. One viral post read: “Boycott Scream 7 — support the woman they tried to silence.”

Despite the storm, Scream 7 is scheduled for theatrical release on February 27, 2026, featuring returning stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, and new cast members Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace, Isabel May, and Anna Camp.

But with the outrage only intensifying, many wonder if Ghostface’s latest comeback will survive a cultural reckoning this loud.
