About 80 million Americans are still struggling to pay their energy bills, as utility companies have been approved for rate increases totaling around $20 billion, as per The Sun report.

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit Worth Up to $3,200

The first available payment is the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, worth up to $3,200. It applies nationwide and was expanded under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, as per The Sun report.


The credit offers financial help for homeowners who make energy-efficient upgrades, such as new doors, windows, skylights, insulation, air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and biomass stoves, as per The Sun report.

To qualify, the improvements must have been made after January 1, 2023, as per the report. The credit equals 30% of certain expenses, including $250 per door (up to $500 total), $600 for windows and skylights, $1,200 for insulation or air sealing, $150 for a home energy audit, and up to $2,000 for heat pumps, water heaters, or biomass systems, as per The Sun report.

California Residents Receive Up to $183 in Energy Credits

In California, residents and small businesses will receive credits totaling $183, as per the report. Pacific Gas and Electric customers will get a $58.23 electricity credit this month, adding to a $67.03 natural gas credit from the spring, as per The Sun report.

Illinois Residents Benefit from $300 Energy Credit

In Illinois, Carbondale residents received $300 toward energy bills after attending the Ameren Illinois Community Development Workshop on October 2. The event provided information on reducing future energy costs, as per The Sun report.

North Dakota Residents Get Up to $1,100 in Energy Assistance

In North Dakota, some residents can get up to $1,100 in energy bill help through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), as per the report. The program is federally funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and run at the state level, as per The Sun report. North Dakota received more than $23 million for the program, which provides payments between October 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026, as per the report.
