Scientists Say Animal Welfare Isn’t Just About Survival: It’s About What Animals Choose, Feel, and Control

Scientists are redefining animal welfare beyond health and productivity, embracing the Teleonome Framework. This approach prioritizes animals' inner feelings, emotional control, and decision-making, recognizing their biological purpose. Welfare no...

Traditionally, welfare in animals was estimated according to certain parameters such as health condition, productivity, and lack of stress reactions. However, nowadays, scientists have found a new approach to this problem that is based on a notion known as the Teleonome Framework. This approach involves switching from the usual measures that take into account external variables to those that consider the inner feelings of animals.

In this case, welfare relies heavily upon the interactions of animals with their surroundings, emotional control, and decision-making. According to scientists, teleonomy means biological purposiveness. Contrary to the commonly held beliefs, animals are not simply living beings responding to environmental stimuli; they interpret the signals received and react to them through evolutionarily developed systems whose main goal is ensuring their survival. As scientists say in the journal Frontiers in Animal Science, comfort, fear, and motivation in animals are consequences, but not causes that make animals move towards better conditions.

This approach has helped scientists define certain criteria of welfare assessment. Namely, it does not matter whether an animal works properly or not, but whether it acts as expected considering its biological potential.

The Link Between Mind and Environment

Teleonomy theory stresses that welfare is achieved through the interplay of internal and external factors. Frameworks like the Five Domains approach underscore the relationship between physical health, behavior, environment, and mental states. This interplay is understood through the concept of environmental affordances; they refer to the possibilities and constraints in an animal's environment that dictate how it behaves within its surroundings. Availability of space and an enriched environment are some factors that can affect the display of natural behaviors and emotions. Scientific studies suggest that when the environment aligns with animals' evolutionary predispositions, their welfare improves.

Furthermore, the physiological aspect is intricately connected to the emotional one. Affective states function as cues to regulate the behavioral component, enabling an organism to achieve homeostasis and optimal welfare.

Why Do Choice and Agency Matter?

The agency principle is another essential element in the idea of Teleonome. Agency refers to the ability of an organism to make decisions and behave on the basis of its own motivations. The presence of agency is important for welfare since it allows for active shaping of experience by animals instead of passive reception of it. According to the research, decision-making capabilities are vital for coping with the environment and reaching optimal welfare by means of picking appropriate stimuli, having enjoyable activities, and avoiding undesired experiences. This makes welfare more proactive than reactive.

Another distinctive feature of the Teleonome model is its attention to keeping biological relevance in welfare analysis. The importance of evolutionary functions and purposeful behavior provides the opportunity to have a better understanding of the needs of animals and their interaction with the environment.
