Health news: A recent study discovered a concerning link between exposure to some "forever chemicals" and gene activity changes that may result in severe health issues such as cancer, neurological diseases, and autoimmune diseases, as per a report.

What Are PFAS and Where Are They Found?

The study was conducted on PFAS, a family of man-made chemicals employed over the past decades in ordinary products like nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, and fire-fighting equipment, as per a TCD report. These chemicals have been found to persist both in the environment and the body, hence the tag "forever chemicals, according to the report.

Firefighters Most at Risk from PFAS Exposure

Melissa Furlong, lead author of the study, and colleagues examined the blood of approximately 300 firefighters, who are frequently exposed to PFAS when they use firefighting foams and protective equipment, as per TCD.

Health Risks Linked to PFAS Exposure

They found associations between gene changes due to PFAS exposure and biological pathways involved in leukemia, bladder, liver, thyroid, and breast cancers, according to the report. They also identified gene changes associated with Alzheimer's disease, lupus, asthma, and tuberculosis, as per the TCD report.

Furlong said, "This gives us a hint as to which genes and which PFAS might be important," as quoted in the report.

This work is an extension of earlier research on PFAS exposure that has been associated with tumors and cancer of the liver and kidney, reproductive problems, low birth weights, and compromised immune systems in children, according to the TCD report.

Retailers Pledge to Phase Out PFAS in Products

To assist in minimizing exposure, over two dozen retail chains with over 150,000 stores have pledged to eliminate PFAS from their products, as per the report. Consumers can also opt for brands that are PFAS-free, reported TCD.

PFAS in Drinking Water: A Growing Concern

PFAS in drinking water is also an issue. Scientists at the University of Illinois and the University of Rochester are creating new technologies to strip these chemicals from drinking water, according to the report.

Fire Departments Begin Switching to Safer Gear

Fire departments are beginning to invest in PFAS-free equipment to further protect their firefighters, as per the TCD report.
