Recently, telescope observations showed that a distant planet in our solar system, Quaoar, has a heavy ring surrounding it, leaving scientists puzzled.
Quaoar is among the approximately 3,000 small planets that revolve around the sun beyond Neptune, and it is the seventh largest, with a size of 690 miles (1,110 km), with Pluto and Eris being the largest of them all.
According to a European Space Agency statement, observations of Quaoar between 2018 and 2021 showed that the planet has a ring located further from it than previously thought. The observations were made using ground-based telescopes and the Cheops space telescope.
Conventional wisdom holds that all the matter composing Quaoar's heavy ring should have come together to form a small moon, but this has not occurred. This has left scientists baffled.
Before the recent observations of Quaoar, scientists widely believed that it was not feasible for planets to possess rings beyond a certain range. It is widely accepted in celestial mechanics that any material in orbit around a planet will form a spherical object, or a moon, if it orbits far enough away from the planet. However, if that moon moves closer to the planet and passes what is known as the "Roche limit," the planet's tidal forces would surpass the gravity holding the moon together, resulting in its destruction.

For instance, all of Saturn's rings are located within the planet's Roche limit. The surprising aspect of Quaoar is that its ring is located far beyond the Roche limit, in an area where the material should have formed a moon.
“As a result of our observations, the classical notion that dense rings survive only inside the Roche limit of a planetary body must be thoroughly revised,” INAF’s Giovanni Bruno said in a statement.
