How Did Scientists Detect Something They Cannot See?
This finding depends on the use of seismic imaging technology, whereby the behavior of earthquake waves is studied as they move through various sections of the Earth. Scientists noticed characteristics that point to the existence of water-bearing mantle rocks in the Pacific region. This kind of water does not act like oceanic or subterranean bodies of water. Rather, it forms chemical bonds with mineral matter like ringwoodite.
