El Ali, the ninth biggest meteorite to strike the planet, brought two new minerals to our planet that are not found here. Every time a meteorite hits the Earth, scientists have a unique chance to study and understand the cosmos a little bit more.

Scientists have recently discovered two previously unknown minerals in the 9th biggest meteorite to strike the Earth, known as El Ali. This enormous meteorite was discovered in Somalia. It was known to the Somalian natives for years and weighed 15,000 kilos, but it wasn't until 2020, when a mining company's workers surveyed the region and noticed its peculiar composition. They realized it was indeed a meteorite.

Soon after it was determined to be a meteorite, University of Alberta scientists started examining it. In 2022, it was discovered that the meteorite includes the two new minerals "Elaliite" and "Elkinstantonite."

Elaliite, the first mineral, was named after the meteorite itself since it was discovered close to the Somalian town of El Ali, while Chris Herd named the second mineral Elkinstantonite in honor of Lindy Elkins-Tanton, the main investigator of NASA's future Psyche project.

NASA InSight lander bids adieu after four years on Mars

“My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send,” the team wrote on InSight's behalf. “Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will — but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me,” the robotic lander tweeted on Tuesday.

As per NASA, InSight which landed on Mars in 2018 and was the first spacecraft to document a marsquake. It detected more than 1,300 marsquakes with its French-built seismometer, including several caused by meteoroid strikes. The most recent marsquake sensed by InSight, earlier this year, left the ground shaking for at least six hours.

The amount of dust covering the lander's solar panels has been causing its power levels to decrease for months. Although NASA announced that InSight unexpectedly failed to reply to contacts from Earth on Sunday, ground controllers at California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory were aware that the mission was about to come to an end.

NASA still has two operating rovers on Mars: Perseverance, which arrived early last year, and Curiosity, which has been exploring the planet's surface since 2012.

Perseverance is currently building a sample depot where ten tubes of rock cores will be left on the Martian surface. In its ongoing hunt for evidence of prehistoric microscopic life on Mars, NASA intends to return some of these samples to Earth.
Additionally, perseverance has a friend named Ingenuity, a little helicopter. It has just finished its 37th flight and has now logged more than an hour of Martian flight time.

Both minerals were discovered in a single 70-gram sample that was forwarded to the University of Alberta for assessment.

Unexpectedly, there is already a chance that the sample contains a third mineral. In an interview, Chris Herd, a professor at the University of Alberta's Meteorite Collection, said that there's a potential that even more minerals may be discovered if scientists were to collect further samples from the huge meteorite.
