Largest underground lake on Earth: Far below the surface of southern Albania, scientists have confirmed the existence of a vast underground lake hidden inside a cave system near the Greek border. Known as Lake Neuron, the turquoise body of water is now considered the largest underground thermal lake currently known on Earth. Reaching the lake was far from simple. The underground chamber sits hundreds of feet below the surface, requiring ropes, specialized equipment, gas monitoring tools, and repeated expeditions to access safely.

Steam Led Scientists to the Hidden Lake

The discovery began when researchers noticed steam rising from the limestone massif during earlier expeditions. The unusual sight suggested that warm water and open underground spaces might exist below.

Following that clue, the expedition team located a deep abyss extending more than 328 feet underground. At the bottom, they found a strong thermal inflow and an enormous lake. What began as an intriguing observation soon turned into a major scientific discovery.

Advanced Technology Confirmed Its Record Size

Finding the lake was only the first step. Scientists needed precise measurements to determine just how large it was.

The team returned with mobile LiDAR scanners and sonar equipment, creating detailed three-dimensional maps of Atmos Cave and nearby cave systems, as per the Eco News report. Their measurements showed that Lake Neuron stretches approximately 460 feet long and 138 feet wide. The lake contains an estimated 294,300 cubic feet of warm mineral-rich water and reaches depths of about 25 feet.

Its water temperature remains close to 79 degrees Fahrenheit. These measurements confirmed that Lake Neuron is the largest underground thermal lake currently known.

How Nature Built This Underground Chamber

Scientists say the cave formed through a process known as hypogene cave formation.

Instead of being carved primarily by surface rivers, the cave developed from rising mineral-rich thermal waters. The waters in the region contain hydrogen sulfide. When this gas mixes with oxygen, it can form sulfuric acid, which slowly dissolves limestone and creates underground chambers, as per the Eco News report.

Over long periods, these chemical reactions hollowed out large spaces beneath the surface, eventually creating the vast chamber that now contains Lake Neuron.

Why the Discovery Matters

Researchers believe the lake is part of a much larger underground water network. Tests showed that water from Lake Neuron feeds springs throughout the valley, although one spring, known as the Old Spa Spring, appears to originate from a different source.

Because underground water systems are often interconnected, scientists say understanding and protecting these hidden environments is important. Research in the region is continuing and includes geological, hydrological, and biological studies aimed at understanding the area's unique subterranean ecosystem, as per the Eco News report.
