You may be breathing through your nose normally right now without realizing that one nostril could be carrying considerably more airflow than the other. That is not necessarily a sign of a cold, allergy or sinus problem. In many healthy people, the two sides of the nose naturally take turns becoming more open and more congested in a phenomenon scientists call the nasal cycle. Research has shown that nasal airflow is not perfectly symmetrical: blood flow and swelling in the nasal tissues change over time, causing one nasal passage to become relatively narrower while the other becomes more open. The remarkable part is that the change can happen without producing the unmistakable sensation of a blocked nose.

What Is the Nasal Cycle and Why Does One Nostril Get Blocked?

The nasal cycle is a recurring fluctuation in airflow between the left and right nasal passages. Instead of keeping both nostrils equally open all the time, the body continuously adjusts the resistance of each side.

The mechanism involves the nasal turbinates, structures covered with highly vascularized mucosal tissue. These tissues contain blood vessels and venous spaces that can fill with blood and become temporarily swollen. When one side becomes more engorged, the available space for air decreases. At roughly the same time, the opposite side tends to become less congested and allows relatively greater airflow.


This does not necessarily mean one nostril becomes completely sealed. Rather, airflow becomes unequal. Research examining the nasal cycle has found that the pattern can vary considerably between individuals and over time. The classic alternating pattern may occur over several hours, although real-world nasal cycles are often more irregular than the simple textbook description suggests.

Science Says Your Autonomic Nervous System Helps Control It

One of the most important biological explanations involves the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which regulates many functions that do not require conscious control.

The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS influence blood vessels within the nasal mucosa. Increased sympathetic activity promotes vasoconstriction, reducing blood volume in nasal vascular tissue and helping open the airway. Reduced sympathetic tone can allow the venous spaces to dilate, increasing mucosal engorgement and resistance to airflow.

Researchers have therefore described the nasal cycle as an example of changing autonomic tone between the two sides of the nose. Earlier physiological research also proposed that central nervous system mechanisms, including brainstem and hypothalamic regulation, may contribute to the rhythm, although the precise control mechanisms are more complicated than a simple on-off switch.

Why You May Not Even Notice One Nostril Is More Blocked

The nasal cycle is an excellent example of how the body can make substantial physiological adjustments without conscious awareness.

If one nasal passage becomes narrower while the other becomes more open, the total nasal airflow may remain adequate. Your brain does not necessarily interpret the difference as congestion because sufficient air is still reaching the respiratory system.

The nose is also doing much more than simply providing a passage for oxygen. The nasal mucosa helps warm, humidify and filter inspired air, while mucociliary mechanisms help move trapped particles and secretions. Researchers have described the nasal passages as an important protective interface for the lower respiratory tract.

This means alternating airflow may be part of the nose's broader physiological strategy for conditioning inhaled air rather than a malfunction.

Sleeping on One Side Can Make the Effect More Obvious

Your normal nasal cycle can also interact with posture. People often notice unilateral stuffiness after sleeping on one side because the nostril facing downward may become more congested. Once a person gets upright and begins moving around, the sensation can change.

Research and clinical explanations also point to factors such as exercise, temperature changes, allergies and inflammation as influences on nasal vascular tone. Exercise, for example, can increase sympathetic activity and is associated with reduced nasal airflow resistance.

When One Blocked Nostril May Not Be a Normal Nasal Cycle

Not every case of one-sided nasal obstruction is physiological. A persistent blockage can have other explanations, including a deviated nasal septum, chronic inflammation, nasal polyps, allergies, infection or other structural problems.

The distinction is important. A normal nasal cycle tends to alternate, whereas persistent obstruction that remains on the same side may warrant medical evaluation. Symptoms such as recurrent nosebleeds, facial pain or pressure, significant difficulty breathing, unusual discharge, reduced smell or persistent unilateral obstruction should not automatically be attributed to the nasal cycle.
