The continuity between the two patents is striking: both attempt to solve practical problems surrounding the moment after a diaper becomes soiled. Rather than treating the diaper as merely an absorbent garment, Curtis explored ways to make it a more complete tool for the entire changing process.
The 1988 patent is also a reminder that patents do not necessarily guarantee that an invention will become a mass-market product.
