What does Blue Mesa’s success really show?

The most interesting part of Blue Mesa’s story may be what cannot be photographed. There is no shoreline covered with mussel shells and no equipment being cleared of thick colonies. The reservoir looks normal because prevention has helped keep it that way.

That does not mean the threat has disappeared. Keeping invasive mussels out requires continued inspections, monitoring and cooperation, especially as boats move between different waterways. The success therefore depends on maintaining the same attention that helped create it.

For Colorado, the reward is simple but valuable. Blue Mesa remains a major reservoir without an established zebra or quagga mussel population. In invasive-species management, sometimes the best result is not removing a problem. It is making sure the problem never gets started.
