In 1939, Mercedes-Benz was building a machine that barely looked like a car. The T 80 stretched more than eight meters long, carried six wheels and was powered by a huge 44.5-liter V12 derived from an aircraft engine. Its mission was simple but extraordinary: go faster than any car had gone before.

The target eventually reached 650 km/h, or about 404 mph. That would have put the Mercedes T 80 deep into record-breaking territory. But there is an important catch. The car never got the chance to prove what it could do. Just as the project was approaching its planned high-speed run, World War II changed everything.

What was the Mercedes T 80 built to do?

The story began with German racing driver Hans Stuck, who was determined to challenge the growing dominance of British drivers in land-speed records. Stuck pushed Daimler-Benz to support the idea of creating an entirely new machine built specifically for straight-line speed.


Ferdinand Porsche was brought into the project to develop the car. This was not intended to be a modified racing vehicle. Every major part of the T 80 was designed around one goal: reaching an extraordinary speed while keeping the machine stable enough to remain on the ground.

The first calculations targeted a lower speed, but the rapidly changing land-speed record forced the engineers to raise their ambitions. By 1939, the planned target had climbed to around 650 km/h.

Why did the T 80 need six wheels?

The six-wheel layout was not simply a strange styling choice. At the speeds Mercedes was targeting, keeping the enormous amount of power under control was a serious engineering problem.

The T 80 used two rear axles, helping distribute the forces generated by its huge engine and allowing the vehicle to put its power onto the ground. Its body was also extremely long and streamlined, designed to reduce aerodynamic drag while producing enough stability to prevent the car from becoming uncontrollable.

Engineers even tested a scale model in a wind tunnel at Friedrichshafen. They were studying how the body would behave when subjected to the aerodynamic forces expected at extreme speed.

That mattered because reaching 600 km/h is not simply a matter of adding horsepower. At those speeds, small aerodynamic problems can become major safety risks.

How powerful was the Mercedes T 80?

The answer is one of the reasons the T 80 remains so remarkable. Mercedes equipped it with a Daimler-Benz DB 603, a 44.5-liter supercharged V12 engine developed from aircraft technology.

The engine was capable of producing enormous power. With special fuel, the project was expected to reach approximately 3,500 horsepower.

For comparison, that was an extraordinary amount of power for any land vehicle of the period. The engineers calculated that around 3,000 horsepower could potentially push the T 80 toward 600 km/h, while the full 3,500-horsepower setup was associated with the ambitious 650 km/h target. But those figures were engineering projections. They were never confirmed by an official high-speed run.

Who was supposed to drive the record car?

Hans Stuck was closely associated with the project from the beginning and was expected to be the driver for the record attempt. His involvement was important because the T 80 was born from his desire to challenge the world's fastest land vehicles.

At the time, land-speed records were becoming a major technological contest, with manufacturers competing to demonstrate what their engineers and machines could accomplish. The T 80 was Mercedes-Benz's enormous answer to that competition.

This is where the story takes its unexpected turn. The project was being developed during a period of growing political and military tension in Europe. Then, in 1939, World War II began. The conditions that had made a spectacular land-speed attempt possible disappeared almost overnight.

Development continued for a short period, and the completed chassis was even subjected to testing. But a public attempt at the planned record was no longer realistic.

The project was eventually abandoned in 1940. The powerful aircraft-derived engine also had far greater importance in wartime aviation than in an experimental land-speed car. As a result, the T 80 never made the run for which it had been built.

Was the Mercedes T 80 actually the fastest car in history?

No. That distinction is important. The T 80 was designed to become one of the fastest land vehicles in the world, but it never established an official speed record. Its famous 600 km/h and 650 km/h figures were targets and calculated performance estimates rather than speeds recorded during a successful record attempt.

That makes the T 80 a fascinating piece of automotive history. It represents what Mercedes-Benz engineers believed was possible before circumstances stopped them from finding out.

The car was effectively frozen at the moment between ambition and proof. It had the engine, the aerodynamics, the six-wheel layout and the calculations. What it never had was the open track and the opportunity to push everything to the limit.

What happened to the T 80?

The single completed T 80 survived and eventually became a historical exhibit rather than a record-setting machine. Today, it is preserved at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

Its significance goes beyond its enormous engine or unusual six-wheel design. The T 80 shows how quickly automotive technology was advancing in the late 1930s, when engineers were attempting to push cars toward speeds that seemed almost unimaginable.

It also carries an unusual place in speed-record history. Most famous record cars are remembered because of the numbers they achieved. The T 80 is remembered partly because of the number it never got to prove.

Had the war not interrupted the project, the story might have been very different. We will never know whether the giant Mercedes could actually have reached 650 km/h in real-world conditions.

What remains is a remarkable machine built for a race that never happened — and a reminder that sometimes the most intriguing cars in history are the ones that never got the chance to show their full potential.
