Why and how was it invented?

In 1865, Nobel developed the blasting cap. It used mercury fulminate inside a small metal cap. The device could be activated by shock or moderate heat. The blasting cap became part of the development of modern high explosives.

Nobel's work was also affected by tragedy. His nitroglycerin factory exploded in 1864. His younger brother Emil and several other people died in the accident. Nobel continued his research despite the accident. He established additional factories and continued looking for ways to make nitroglycerin safer to use.

Who invented it?

Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. Nobel was born on October 21, 1833, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the fourth son of Immanuel and Caroline Nobel. His father, Immanuel Nobel, was an inventor and engineer. Alfred showed an interest in explosives and engineering from an early age.

The Nobel family moved from Stockholm to St. Petersburg in 1842. Alfred received private tutoring and studied several subjects. By the age of 16, he was a competent chemist. He spoke Swedish, English, French, German and Russian.

In 1850, Nobel went to Paris to study chemistry. He later worked in the United States under John Ericsson, who built the ironclad warship Monitor. Nobel returned to St. Petersburg in 1852 and worked at his father's factory. The factory produced military equipment during the Crimean War.

After the war, the company struggled to move toward peacetime production. It went bankrupt in 1859. Nobel and his parents returned to Sweden, where he began experiments with explosives.



Alfred Nobel's other explosive inventions

Dynamite was one part of Nobel's work with explosives. He registered more than 350 patents in different countries.

His major explosive-related inventions included:

  • Blasting cap, 1865: A detonator using mercury fulminate to initiate an explosive charge.
  • Dynamite, 1867: Nitroglycerin absorbed into kieselguhr.
  • Blasting gelatin, 1875: A material made by mixing nitroglycerin with nitrocellulose. It had greater blasting power and water resistance.
  • Ballistite, 1887: A smokeless powder made from nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. It became a precursor to later propellants.
Nobel also worked on gas and fluid equipment, methods for concentrating sulfuric acid and synthetic materials. His research included attempts to produce artificial silk, leather and rubber.


How did it help the world?

Dynamite became useful in mining and construction because it allowed workers to break and remove rock on a larger scale. The invention was soon used for tunnels, canals, railways and roads. These projects often required the removal of rock that could not be moved efficiently with manual tools alone.

During the 1870s and 1880s, Nobel built factories across Europe to produce dynamite. He also created companies to manufacture and market his explosives. The invention therefore became part of industrial development. At the same time, explosives were also used for military purposes. Nobel later developed products that contributed to the development of modern propellants.


Nobel's business and patents

Nobel's inventions made him wealthy. His brothers Robert and Ludvig developed oilfields near Baku, in present-day Azerbaijan, along the Caspian Sea. Alfred Nobel had interests in his brothers' companies in Russia. His own explosives businesses also expanded.

In 1893, Nobel became interested in Sweden's arms industry. In 1894, he purchased an ironworks at Bofors near Värmland. It later became the centre of the Bofors arms factory. Nobel also faced disputes with competitors. He had to take part in patent litigation because other companies were accused of using his processes.


Alfred Nobel's life outside inventions

Nobel was known for spending much of his life working and travelling. Despite his business interests, he lived a private life. He never married. He had an interest in literature and wrote plays, novels and poems, although most of his literary work was not published.

He was interested in science and humanitarian causes. He was also associated with pacifist ideas and hoped that the destructive power of weapons could contribute to an end to war. His views were complex. He distrusted democracy and opposed women's suffrage. His outlook toward humanity and nations was also pessimistic.


From dynamite to the Nobel Prizes

Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, in San Remo, Italy, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. He had developed angina pectoris in 1895. At the time of his death, his business empire included more than 90 factories producing explosives and ammunition.

Nobel had signed his will in Paris on November 27, 1895. The document surprised his family and the public because he directed most of his fortune toward establishing prizes. The prizes later became known as the Nobel Prizes.

The exact reason behind Nobel's decision is not known. One possible explanation involves a newspaper mistake in 1888. Nobel's brother Ludvig died in Cannes, France. Some French newspapers mistakenly reported Alfred Nobel's death.

One newspaper used the phrase "the merchant of death" when reporting the death. It is possible that this incident influenced Nobel's thinking about how he would be remembered after his death. However, the reason remains uncertain.

The Nobel Prizes reflected Nobel's interests in physics, chemistry, physiology, literature and peace. His friendship with Austrian pacifist Bertha von Suttner is also considered an influence on the peace prize.

Nobel's legacy therefore contains two parts. His inventions contributed to the development and use of explosives in mining, construction and warfare. His fortune later created awards that recognise work in science, literature and peace.
