The problem was not simply how to lift a platform. The challenge was how to stop it if the main lifting mechanism failed. Elisha Otis worked on this problem while employed in factories. His work eventually produced what he called the “safety hoist.”

The basic process worked as follows:

  • The elevator platform was connected to a lifting rope or chain.

  • If the rope broke or lost tension, the spring pushed the arms outward.
  • The arms moved into the teeth on the guide rails.
  • The mechanism locked the platform and stopped its descent.
This meant the platform did not depend only on the main rope for safety. The mechanical brake provided a separate method of stopping the platform. This was the central part of the invention that changed the future of elevator systems.


Elisha Otis and the development of the safety hoist

Elisha Otis was born on August 3, 1811, in Halifax, Vermont, in the United States. He was a descendant of James Otis, who had immigrated from England to New England in 1631. At the age of 19, Otis moved to Troy, New York. He later moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, where he worked in different jobs.

From 1838 to 1845, he manufactured wagons and carriages in Brattleboro. He later moved his family to Albany, New York. In Albany, Otis worked as a master mechanic in a bedstead factory. During this period, he developed several machines designed to reduce manual work.

In 1851, he was working as a master mechanic at another bedstead factory in Bergen, New Jersey. The company sent him to Yonkers, New York, in 1852. His task was to operate a new factory and install its machinery.

It was in Yonkers that Otis designed and installed his safety hoist. It was the first elevator equipped with an automatic safety device designed to prevent a platform from falling if its lifting chain or rope broke.


The first elevator sale in 1853

In the following year, Otis left his job and established a small elevator shop in Yonkers. On September 20, 1853, he sold his first elevator machine. The machine was designed for freight rather than passenger service. At first, orders were limited. Otis needed a way to demonstrate that his safety system worked. That opportunity came in 1854.


The Crystal Palace demonstration

In 1854, Otis arranged with showman P.T. Barnum to exhibit his invention at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City. The event became known as the Crystal Palace Exhibition. Otis used the exhibition to demonstrate the safety brake in front of a public audience.

He stood on a platform high above the crowd. An assistant then cut the retaining rope with an axe. The platform dropped only a few inches before the safety brake engaged. The mechanism stopped the platform.

Otis then reassured the audience by saying, “All safe, gentlemen, all safe.” The demonstration showed people that an elevator could have a mechanism to prevent a free fall if its main rope failed. The event helped bring attention to his invention and supported the development of the elevator business.


Sales increased after the demonstration

The company recorded eight elevator sales in 1854. In 1855, it sold 15 elevators. The numbers showed that the invention was beginning to find customers. The safety system addressed a problem that had limited confidence in lifting machines. The invention was not only about moving goods. It also created the conditions for elevators to become part of buildings used by the public.


The first passenger safety elevator

On March 23, 1857, Otis installed the first safety elevator for passenger service in New York City. The elevator was installed in the store of E.V. Haughwout & Co. The building was a five-story department store. The elevator allowed customers and goods to move between floors without using only stairs.

The store had wealthy customers, including Mary Todd Lincoln. The installation became an important event in elevator history because it showed that the safety system could be used for passengers as well as freight.




How elevators changed buildings?

The elevator safety brake helped remove one of the problems associated with moving people vertically. Before passenger elevators became practical, the number of floors people could use comfortably was limited by the need to climb stairs.

A building could physically have several floors, but businesses had reasons to keep important spaces closer to street level. Safe passenger elevators changed this calculation. As elevator systems became more reliable, people could travel between multiple floors without climbing long flights of stairs.

This supported the development of taller buildings. The change also affected cities. Land in busy areas could be used for buildings with more floors. Offices, stores and other businesses could operate above the ground level. The elevator therefore became part of the development of the modern city.


Otis continued developing elevator technology

Otis did not stop after developing the safety brake. On January 15, 1861, he patented an independently controlled steam engine for elevator use. The system was installed in 1862. His work also included other mechanical inventions.

In 1852, he patented railroad-car trucks and brakes. In 1857, he patented a steam plow. In 1858, he patented a bake oven. These inventions show that Otis worked across different areas of mechanical engineering.


The death of Elisha Otis and the company legacy

Elisha Otis died on April 8, 1861, in Yonkers, New York. He was 49 years old. His sons, Charles and Norton, continued the business after his death. Their work helped develop the company that eventually became the Otis Elevator Company.

The business later expanded beyond the original elevator invention. It became involved in elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation and service. The company now operates in many locations around the world.


170 years of the Otis elevator business

September 20, 2023, marked 170 years since the first sale of an elevator associated with Elisha Otis' safety brake. The company has described the 1853 invention as a solution to a problem of the Industrial Revolution: how to move freight between floors without putting people at risk or destroying cargo if the hoisting rope broke. The invention eventually affected how buildings were designed and how people moved within cities.

The history of the company includes several milestones between the first elevator sale and the development of modern elevator and escalator systems. Today, elevators are used in residential buildings, offices, stores, hospitals, hotels, factories and transportation facilities.
