A tiny Blanding’s turtle named Ivy disappeared into the Massachusetts landscape after her release in 2011. For more than a decade, nobody knew where she had gone. Then field researchers found her again as a full-grown adult. In 2025, they watched her lay eggs in the wild. One year later, two of her captive-raised offspring were released into the same Great Meadows wetlands, creating a rare conservation milestone: a turtle once given a head start had produced the next generation herself.

A seven-gram turtle disappears into the wild

Ivy’s story began before she was even born. In spring 2010, a female Blanding’s turtle left the wetlands at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord and traveled more than 1.2 miles across the landscape. She eventually reached a nearby office park, where she chose a landscaped flower bed as a nesting site. The location might seem surprising, but it reflects a basic feature of Blanding’s turtle biology: females can travel considerable distances to find suitable nesting ground.

The nest produced 11 hatchlings. Ten were males and one was female. That lone female weighed only about seven grams, roughly the weight of a small coin, when she was brought into Stone Zoo’s care. She became known as Ivy, or turtle number 144, and entered Zoo New England’s headstarting program. For a species whose young face intense pressure from predators, those first months can determine whether a hatchling ever reaches adulthood.


Headstarting does not mean keeping turtles in captivity permanently. The idea is much more targeted. Hatchlings are raised through the period when they are smallest and most vulnerable, then returned to the habitat where they belong. At Stone Zoo, Ivy spent about 10 months growing under human care before her release in 2011. By then, she was far larger and stronger than she had been as a seven-gram hatchling.

Why the first winter matters so much

A young Blanding’s turtle enters the world with almost none of the physical advantages of an adult. Its shell is small, its body is tiny, and predators can include birds, mammals, snakes and other animals that can easily overpower a hatchling. The conservation strategy therefore focuses on changing the odds during this particularly dangerous stage rather than trying to control every threat in the wild.

In a headstarting facility, the turtle can spend its first winter in a protected environment with reliable food and controlled conditions. That allows it to grow rapidly. Zoo New England describes released headstarts as being roughly the size of a much older wild turtle, giving them a physical advantage when they return to wetlands. At Great Meadows, headstarted hatchlings have been estimated to have dramatically better chances of surviving to adulthood than turtles facing their first winter entirely in the wild.

That difference matters because turtle conservation is not simply about producing more hatchlings. A population needs animals that survive long enough to reproduce. Blanding’s turtles are slow-growing, long-lived reptiles, and adult females are especially important to population recovery. MassWildlife notes that the species uses several different habitats during its life cycle, which means protecting a single patch of wetland is not enough.

Then Ivy vanished

After her release in 2011, Ivy disappeared from the researchers’ records. She had a small shell notch that allowed conservation workers to identify her if she was encountered again, but there was no guarantee that anyone would see her. For more than 10 years, her whereabouts remained unknown.

That long gap is not necessarily unusual for a turtle. Blanding’s turtles can move between wetlands, seasonal pools and upland areas, and females may travel substantial distances when nesting. Their movements can take them across roads and fragmented landscapes, which makes monitoring difficult and exposes them to serious risks. A turtle can spend years alive in a landscape without crossing paths with the people searching for it.

In 2023, routine field monitoring finally produced the answer. Researchers rediscovered Ivy alive and fully grown. The tiny turtle that had left Stone Zoo more than a decade earlier had become an adult capable of reproduction. Her survival was important, but the researchers still needed to know whether she would actually contribute offspring to the wild population.

The mystery became a nesting story

Zoo New England fitted Ivy with a radio transmitter so conservation workers could follow her movements and look for signs that she was preparing to nest. Radio telemetry is especially useful for animals like Blanding’s turtles because much of their important activity happens away from the obvious wetland habitat. Tracking can reveal when a female leaves the marsh, where she travels and where she eventually settles to lay eggs.

The decisive moment came on June 25, 2025. Senior field conservationist Jimmy Welch followed Ivy as she moved away from the refuge wetlands toward adjacent conservation land owned by the Town of Concord. During the night, she selected a protected wildflower meadow and began digging. At about 2:30 a.m., she started laying her eggs.

Ivy laid eight eggs. Seven successfully hatched that fall. Those hatchlings were then brought into Zoo New England’s HATCH program, where local classrooms helped raise them through their vulnerable first year. The arrangement turned the conservation project into something larger than a zoo effort. Students were directly involved in raising young turtles that had a clear genetic connection to a turtle released through the same conservation program years earlier.

Two of Ivy’s offspring return to the marsh

On June 25, 2026, exactly one year after Ivy laid her eggs, two of those young turtles were released at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. They were about nine months old and had spent the winter being raised through the headstarting program. The remaining offspring were also being prepared for release, with some raised by Massachusetts students who participated in the program.

The significance goes beyond two small turtles entering a wetland. These were the first confirmed second-generation offspring of a Blanding’s turtle that had itself gone through the Great Meadows headstarting program. Ivy had moved through the entire conservation cycle: wild hatchling, headstarted juvenile, released turtle, surviving adult, nesting female and now mother of a new generation.

That is an important distinction in conservation biology. Releasing animals can increase numbers temporarily, but a restored population ultimately has to reproduce without depending entirely on people to keep adding individuals. Ivy’s offspring provide evidence that turtles raised through the program can survive, mature and eventually become part of the breeding population. The goal is not simply more turtles in the marsh. It is a population capable of sustaining itself.

The landscape is as important as the turtles

Blanding’s turtles are listed as threatened under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act. The species uses shallow wetlands, marshes, seasonal pools and upland nesting areas, often moving between them. That lifestyle creates a conservation problem because the turtle needs a connected landscape rather than a single protected pond. Roads, development and habitat fragmentation can turn ordinary movements into dangerous journeys.

The choice of Ivy’s nesting site is a reminder of that complexity. Her mother traveled from a protected wetland to an office park in 2010. Ivy later chose a wildflower meadow on conservation land. Neither story fits the simple idea that wildlife stays neatly inside a reserve. Blanding’s turtles move through human-dominated landscapes, and successful conservation depends on protecting the places they use between wetlands as well as the wetlands themselves.

Great Meadows has become an important testing ground for that approach. Zoo New England’s conservation program began there in 2003, and hundreds of headstarted Blanding’s turtles have since been released into the refuge and surrounding wetlands. The effort also involves MassWildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, schools, local landowners, conservation groups and volunteers.

The release of Ivy’s offspring does not mean the Blanding’s turtle has been saved. Conservationists still face habitat loss, fragmentation, road mortality and the broader difficulty of protecting a species that takes years to mature. But the event answers a question that years of monitoring alone could not settle: can a turtle given a head start eventually reproduce in the wild?

Ivy supplied the answer.

She began life as a seven-gram hatchling from an unexpected nest beside an office park. She spent her first winter under human care, disappeared after her release, survived more than a decade largely out of sight, and eventually returned to the attention of the people who had once known her as a tiny turtle. In 2025, she laid the eggs that produced the next generation. In 2026, two of those offspring entered the same wild landscape.

For a turtle species that measures success in decades rather than seasons, that timeline matters. The real achievement is not that Ivy was found again. It is that she lived long enough to reproduce, and that her offspring are now beginning their own lives in the wild. Conservation, in this case, has finally produced something that cannot be counted in a single release event: a second generation.
