An out-of-commission European Space Agency satellite, comparable in size to a school bus, is set to make re-entry into Earth's atmosphere later this week, as per a Fox Weather report.

NASA, ESA, and other prominent members of the international aerospace community have established protocols aimed at minimizing the proliferation of defunct satellites and rocket components in low-Earth orbit.

These guidelines mandate either the natural decay of satellites or a controlled reentry process following the conclusion of their missions.

ERS-2 is ESA's inaugural advanced Earth observation satellite. It was launched on April 21, 1995.

ESA made the decision to terminate its operation in 2011 and initiate the satellite's deorbiting process to mitigate the risk of contributing to space debris. The decision came after 16 years of meticulously studying Earth's land, oceans, and polar caps.
