San Francisco Bay Area hit by 2.8 magnitude earthquake, confirm seismologists

Hundreds of people were affected by a 2.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred south of San Francisco in California, close to Half Moon Bay.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 2.8-magnitude earthquake that was experienced by hundreds of people occurred south of San Francisco in California. On Tuesday, November 15, at 9:22 pm earthquake measuring 6.5 miles in depth struck 1.5 miles south of Half Moon Bay, as per the reports from the USGS. The agency received hundreds of reports of tremors from persons who had travelled as far as San Ramon and Pinole.

According to early reports, the shaker's epicentre was in the town of El Cerrito's Hillside Natural Area.

An 11,000-population city, Half Moon Bay is located about 30 miles south of San Francisco. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, magnitude measures the energy generated at the epicentre of the earthquake. The first Richter scale is no longer valid.


Reports state that earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 5.4 are commonly felt but infrequently result in substantial damage. Most individuals rarely experience earthquakes with a magnitude below 2.5.
