Sam Altman's departure from OpenAI won't lead to immediate return as he takes on new Microsoft role

Sam Altman, the ousted ex-CEO of OpenAI, is charting a new course. Following his abrupt departure from OpenAI, Altman was swiftly enlisted to spearhead a new advanced AI research team at Microsoft. The unexpected move comes on the heels of Altman's termination, with the OpenAI board citing a lack of consistent candour in his communications as the impetus.

While speculation swirled about a potential return to OpenAI after Altman shared an image donning an OpenAI guest pass on the X social media platform, Microsoft's chief executive, Satya Nadella, quashed such notions. Nadella officially confirmed Altman's appointment to lead Microsoft's AI research endeavours.



Microsoft has been a substantial investor in OpenAI, contributing billions to the development of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that garnered widespread attention upon its launch last year. Altman's move to Microsoft adds a new chapter to his involvement in the world of artificial intelligence, raising questions about the trajectory of both OpenAI and Microsoft in the evolving AI landscape.

As Emmett Shear assumes the role of interim CEO at OpenAI, succeeding Altman, the dynamics within the organisation are poised for change. Shear, former chief executive of Amazon's streaming platform Twitch, steps into a pivotal role during a period of transition for OpenAI.

Despite the shakeup, Microsoft remains steadfast in its commitment to the partnership with OpenAI. Satya Nadella expressed eagerness about working with Shear and OpenAI's new leadership team, emphasising Microsoft's ongoing dedication to advancing AI research and collaboration. The departure of Altman, a co-founder of OpenAI, also prompted the resignation of Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, signalling a significant shift in the organisation's leadership landscape.
