Safe haven assets explained: What they are, how they work, and if you should invest
Wall Street saw big market swings on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones went down sharply and at one point fell almost 1,000 points. Later, it recovered a little, but the market was still very shaky. Oil prices continued to go up. This happened because people are worried about oil supply after US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Because of all this uncertainty, many investors felt scared and confused. Some started looking for “safe-haven” assets to protect their money.

A safe haven is an investment that holds or increases its value during market chaos or political tension. It is not 100% safe, but historically it has stayed more stable during uncertain times, according to Yahoo Finance. Safe-haven assets usually have high liquidity, meaning people can quickly buy or sell them when needed. They often have limited supply (scarcity), which helps protect their value over time. They usually have low volatility and low connection to risky assets, so their prices don’t move the same way as stocks.

Gold and Silver

Gold is one of the most popular safe-haven assets. Gold prices often rise during uncertainty. Gold can protect against inflation because its supply is limited, unlike paper money that governments can print more of. Gold prices often go up when the US dollar falls. Gold also helps diversify portfolios because it is a physical asset.

Silver is also considered a safe-haven investment, but it is different from gold. Silver has strong industrial demand because it is used in electronics and electric vehicles, according to Yahoo Finance. Silver can act as an inflation hedge, but its price is often linked to economic growth. Gold and silver prices hit record highs in late 2025 after new tariffs were introduced. Even after prices fell, JPMorgan predicted gold could reach $6,300 per ounce by the end of 2026, driven by central bank and investor demand.

Treasury bills (T-Bills)

Treasury bills (T-bills) are short-term government securities, lasting up to 52 weeks. Right now, T-bill rates range from 3.4% to 3.64%, according to Yahoo Finance. Sometimes T-bills offer higher returns than high-yield savings accounts. T-bills are considered very safe because they are backed by the full faith of the US government, which promises to repay investors. Interest earned on T-bills is free from state and local taxes, which is helpful for investors in high-tax states.

Cash and currencies

Cash is also considered a safe haven. Cash keeps its value stable during stock market crashes. But cash does not earn returns, which means there is an opportunity cost. Some currencies are also seen as safe havens, including the Swiss franc, Japanese yen, and US dollar. These currencies belong to politically stable countries with strong liquidity.

Defensive stocks

Defensive stocks are shares of companies that stay strong even when the economy is not doing well. These companies sell products such as food, soap, medicine, electricity, and water. Even if money is tight or markets are falling, people still buy these basic things. Because of this, these company shares do not fall as much when the stock market goes up and down. Yahoo Finance says these types of stocks are usually more stable during hard times.
