Sabrina Carpenter addresses “Man’s Best Friend” album cover backlash
Pop star Sabrina Carpenter has responded to the heated debate surrounding the cover art for her latest album, Man’s Best Friend. The original image, showcasing Carpenter on all fours with a suited figure holding her hair, drew criticism from some who felt it perpetuates harmful stereotypes about women.

Social Media Reactions and Criticism

Social media erupted with both criticism and defenders when Carpenter announced the album in June. Some critics labeled the cover offensive, while advocacy groups raised strong concerns. Glasgow Women’s Aid, a Scottish organization supporting women affected by domestic violence, stated the artwork “isn’t edgy, it’s regressive,” mentioning that it reinforces “tired tropes that reduce women to pets, props, and possessions and promote an element of violence and control.”

In a column for The Telegraph, writer Poppie Platt condemned Carpenter’s “over-sexed, degrading new album cover” and explained her marketing approach as “troubling,” comparing it to the TikTok-driven “trad-wife” trend, that encourages submission to men and traditional gender roles.

Carpenter’s Perspective on Backlash

Carpenter explained her perspective on the album’s themes, citing, “I think as a young woman, you’re just as aware of when you’re in control as when you’re not, and I think some of those are choices,” adding that the album is “about the humanity of allowing yourself to make those mistakes.”

The singer said that she took the criticism with a “grain of salt,” citing it as “a lot of pointing fingers” from people who “hadn’t heard the project.” Carpenter also mentioned that her fans defended the cover as satire and said, she knew her “fans that know me and know the person behind the music would look at that photo and know exactly what it is.”

In an interview with King, she said, “The album is not for any pearl-clutchers,” but acknowledged that critics could still “find something that makes them smirk and chuckle to themselves” in her music. Carpenter also released an alternate cover on Instagram, with a humorous caption as “approved by God.”
