A local official in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia has claimed that at least 17 people were killed after their apartment building was shelled by Russians overnight. The blast partially damaged a nine-story structure, destroyed five homes, claimed the lives of 17 people and injured at least 49 others, including six children, according to reports.

Since the start of the battle, Zaporizhzhia has been particularly heavily affected by the Russians, who are believed to have taken over the neighbouring nuclear power station and used it as a base for their forces.

While the city is still under Ukrainian authority, the territory is one of four that Moscow has recently 'annexed'. Since the beginning of the war, people have worried artillery hits that if one reactor, it might cause a nuclear disaster similar to Chornobyl.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said earlier this week that the Zaporizhzhia plant relies on emergency diesel generators after losing its only remaining external power source due to continuous shelling.
