An alleged case of cannibalism within Russian troops came to light after a phone call was intercepted by Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR). The phone call captured Russian soldiers discussing how one soldier allegedly murdered and devoured a fellow serviceman while deployed in eastern Ukraine. The recording of the intercepted call was published on Friday, June 20, 2025, by Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, HUR, on its Telegram channel.

In the call recording, it was claimed that a serviceman with the call sign “Brelok” is said to have killed his fellow soldier “Foma” and then devoured his former comrade’s remains for two weeks, according to Kyiv Post. The first speaker said, “No one ran anywhere.” “Brelok f**ing took him out and then ate him for two weeks,” he said. Later, “Brelok” himself was found dead, according to the call recording.

The second soldier, who was in shock, responded, “No f**ing way… holy sh*t… fu*k my bald skull. Was Brelok really found as a 200?” according to Kyiv Post. The term 200 is Soviet-era military slang used in today’s Russian army to refer to a soldier killed in action.

“Yeah, they say he was a 200. He ate his comrade. So yeah… something to think about. I was shocked,” the first speaker said. According to HUR, the two soldiers served in the 52nd Separate Reconnaissance Battalion, stationed in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region, TVP World reported. Ukrainian intelligence claims that the alleged incident portrays the “moral and psychological collapse” of Russian forces as the war in Ukraine continues.

In a recording that surfaced in May 2025, it was revealed that the Russian troops were spiraling out of control in border regions. They were terrorizing and harassing their own civilians while intoxicated.
