Russell Crowe denies being part of ‘Gladiator 2’

Russel Crowe has denied media reports that he is appearing in ‘ ‘Gladiator 2’ sequel. Rumors started doing the rounds about his acting in the movie after he was spotted in Malta, where the film is being shot.

Crowe portrayed Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott’s film for which he received Oscar for best actor in the year 2000. He explained that since the character he played has died, he has no role left and so he won’t be a part of the movie. Talking to journalists at the Czech film festival at Crlovy Vary, ‘Gladiator 2’ star said that he was in Malta for a concert with his band Indoor Garden Party.

Russel Crowe said that he got nostalgic when he saw the set, which was identical to one created for the original ‘Gladiator’ in 1999. He said that when he saw the set of Fort Ricasoli and the Colosseum, he felt as if he was caught in a time warp and asked himself what time it was. The man who played Maximus Decimus Meridius said that he was not expecting that the Colosseum would be built in exactly the same place.


The film will show Connie Neilson Lucilla’s son Lucius, to be portrayed by Paul Mescal. Crowe said jokingly that he was dead, so he won’t be there. He also praised the director and said that Ridley is making this film after 20 years, so he must have strong reasons and the movie must be spectacular.

David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson wrote the story, and Universal Pictures produced it. The film was so much popular that it grossed USD 503 million and became the second most successful movie of the year 2000 after ‘Mission Impossible 2’. Gladiator won five Oscar Awards including the Best Actor for Russell Crowe.
