Rubio’s State Department in turmoil: Staff overworked, morale plummets amid layoff fears
The US State Department faces internal turmoil. Staffers work long hours amidst global crises. They also face potential layoffs initiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This situation has severely impacted employee morale. A request for cheerf...

Massive Layoffs Looming Over a Strained Workforce
Rubio, who took over the department under US president Donald Trump’s second term, has called the agency “bloated” and in April announced his intent to slash 15% of its more than 2,000-person workforce, according to Daily Beast. But while tensions of layoffs are looming, employees are still being asked to volunteer to work overtime to manage rising crises, particularly the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, as reported by the Washington Post.
A State Department official told the Washington Post that the department “either doesn’t appreciate or just doesn’t care” about its employees, as reported by the Daily Beast. The official also added, “Doing extra shifts while this ax is swinging above our heads is just devastating to morale,” as quoted in the report.
The contradiction of the situation is of asking staff to take on more responsibility even as their jobs hang in the balance, has left many feeling both overworked and undervalued, according to the Daily Beast report.

A Call for Cheer Amid Chaos
The tensions within the department increased even more when the workers were sent a message requesting that they share joyous photos of July 4 celebrations at embassies and consulates around the world, according to the report. The workers were asked to “collect a high-quality set of visuals”—including “candid shots of attendees enjoying the event” and “smiling children, families, and diplomats,” as quoted by Daily Beast.
Another State Department staffer told the Washington Post that, “To me, the irony of asking for happy photos of smiling children, happy families, and guests celebrating while threatening to fire thousands is peak Trumpism,” as quoted in the report.
Supreme Court Ruling Holds Workers in Limbo
The threat of layoff has intensified as Rubio initially gave a July 1 deadline for the job cuts, as per Daily Beats. However, now the Supreme Court is assessing the permissibility of layoffs across the federal government under the Trump administration, as reported by the Daily Beast. The president of the union that represents America’s diplomats, Tom Yazdgerdi highlighted that the job cuts “show serious disregard for members of the Foreign Service managing multiple conflicts and assisting American citizens in the Middle East and other crisis zones,” as quoted in the report.
