Ruben Gallego introduces measure to stop Trump from taking over Greenland

U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego said on Tuesday that he is introducing a resolution to stop President Donald Trump from invading Greenland. Gallego reacted after the Trump administration increased strong talk about the U.S. taking control of Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark. “WAKE UP,” Gallego wrote on social media platform X on Tuesday.

“Trump is telling us exactly what he wants to do. Trump talks about Greenland

Trump said he would let others decide if the recent U.S. attack on Venezuela to capture its leader, Nicolas Maduro, had any meaning for Greenland. Trump also said, “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense,” during the interview. On Sunday, Trump spoke again while on Air Force One and repeated his views on Greenland.


“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it, I can tell you,” Trump said, as stated by CNBC. On Monday, Gallego introduced an amendment to the Senate Defense Appropriations bill. The amendment would stop U.S. government money from being used for military action against Greenland.

The White House responded to the issue on Tuesday through a spokesperson. “President Trump believes Greenland is a strategically important location that is critical from the standpoint of national security,” the White House spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman also said Trump believes Greenlanders would be better protected by the U.S. from modern Arctic threats.

Denmark and Greenland react

“The President is committed to establishing long-term peace at home and abroad,” the spokeswoman added. On Tuesday, the governments of Denmark and Greenland asked for a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as noted by CNBC. The request was made to “discuss the significant statement made by the United States about Greenland,” Greenland Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said in a statement.

Motzfeldt said Denmark and Greenland had asked for minister-level meetings throughout 2025 but did not get one. Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, was asked on Tuesday if he was worried about the Venezuela attack spreading to other places. “I hope it does spread to Cuba. Greenland’s a different deal,” Graham said. Graham said many people want a stronger U.S. presence in Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.

“Everybody wants us to have a bigger presence in Greenland to combat the Russian/Chinese Arctic influence,” Graham said. “I totally agree with that. “If I’m a European member of NATO, I would reassess my participation in the endeavor if NATO countries are being invaded by Donald Trump,” Murphy said. When asked if NATO would have to defend Greenland against the U.S., Murphy said, “Of course, yes”. “That’s what Article 5 says,” Murphy explained.

“Article 5 did not anticipate that the invading country would be a member of NATO,” Murphy added, as mentioned by CNBC. “We’re laughing, but this is not actually something to laugh about now because I think he’s increasingly serious,” Murphy said. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also spoke on Sunday. She urged the U.S. “to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have said very clearly that they are not for sale”.

Frederiksen said Denmark and Greenland are part of NATO and are protected by the alliance. “The Kingdom of Denmark — and thus Greenland — is part of NATO and is therefore covered by the alliance’s security guarantee,” she said. Frederiksen also pointed out that the U.S. already has military access to Greenland, according to CNBC. “We already have a defense agreement between the Kingdom and the United States today, which gives the United States wide access to Greenland,” she said.
