Rory McIlroy, fresh off his historic Masters triumph last month, has confirmed that he will soon relocate to the United Kingdom with his family. The Northern Irish golfer, his wife Erica Stoll, and their four-year-old daughter Poppy will be moving into their newly completed home near the Wentworth Club in Surrey later this year.

McIlroy will be completing major tournaments including PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina and the US Open 2025 at Oakmont in June before moving to the UK. The move marks a significant shift for the 36-year-old sportsman who has been based in South Florida for several years.

Family’s new home in Wentworth likely to be permanent residence

The Northern Irishman player, speaking ahead of the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, said that he and his family visited their new home after Augusta. The home was undergoing final finishes, he said, adding that they had to get over to Hollywood.


As per a New York Post report, though McIlroy planned to keep his Florida mansion as a US base for tournament play, the Wentworth home may become their permanent residence.

Wife Erica’s preference for cooler climate drove relocation

McIlroy admitted they had been mulling over relocating to the UK for a while since his wife Erica prefers England’s cooler climate. Reportedly Stoll, a native of upstate New York, had once confided to German golfer Martin Kaymer at a Starbucks that she prefers colder weather.

The couple bought the plot in an exclusive private estate, which is located less than 90 minutes west of London, with long-term plans in mind. McIlroy’s private jet, reportedly, was spotted landing at Farnborough Airport before he visited his hometown in Northern Ireland last month—five days after his nail-biting playoff victory over Justin Rose at Augusta National.

Emotional reflections on family and career

McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam with his victory at the Masters. He became the sixth golfer in history to win all four majors as a result. He described the last round's emotional rollercoaster as one of his most difficult days on the golf course.

Moreover, the couple’s journey has not been without challenges. The star golfer and Erica were headed for divorce in 2024, but reconciled. Stoll and Poppy were in Augusta to witness his greatest triumph.

Reflecting on his post-win trip home, the player admitted he did not want fanfare but just wanted to see his parents and others closest to him. He confessed that he and his mother were briefly emotional when they met.

The golfer further stated that as he is growing older, the importance of family is deepening for him. For him, it means the world that his family saw him fulfil his dreams.
