Veteran Brittney Sykes bounced back from a scoreless outing on Sunday by contributing 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. A dominant third quarter proved decisive for Washington (13-13), who handed Chicago (7-19) its sixth straight loss.
The Mystics used a 12-point run to build a 17-point lead, fueled by 10 points from Sykes and strong defensive play.
During that stretch, Chicago’s Angel Reese picked up her fifth foul on an incidental hit to Emily Engstler's face. Reese requested a review, but the call stood.
The Sky closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 11, but Washington pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Chicago 23-17 to seal the win.
Reese, returning after a four-game absence due to a back injury, notched her 11th consecutive double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Kamilla Cardoso added 21 points and 10 boards for Chicago.
The Mystics’ victory marked their fifth straight win over the Sky, dating back to last season. However, Washington’s Sug Sutton exited late in the fourth quarter with a leg injury after colliding with Reese. The teams face off again on August 5 in Chicago.
