Rock legend David Crosby passed away at 81, his family announced Thursday. A folk rock pioneer, Crosby was also one of the founding members of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY). In a statement obtained by media outlets, the Crosby family said that he died from a long illness. It also stated that Crosby was surrounded by his wife Jan and son Django at the time of his death.
David Crosby initially moved to Los Angeles in 1960 from Santa Barbara with the aim of becoming an actor. However, he deviated to music in 1963 when he formed the rock band The Byrds alongside Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. In 1965, The Byrds was nominated for best new artist Grammy.
The Byrds’ 1965 hit song ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ was made popular again in the mid-90s when it was featured in the movie ‘Forest Gump’ in 1994. Eventually, Crosby went on to win the best new artist Grammy award as a member of CSNY in 1970.
