Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveils 2023 nominees. Check list here
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has shared its nominees for the Class of 2023. Around 14 or 15 musicians (as two musicians have been placed together in the nominees) have been put forward as potential inductees, including first-time nominees Sheryl...

The following musicians have been put up as members of the 2023 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Kate Bush, a pioneer of art rock; Sheryl Crow, a rootsy hitmaker; Missy Elliott, a pioneer of hip-hop; Iron Maiden, a metal classic; and the pioneers of post-punk turned dance music Joy Division/New Order, oddball pop icon Cyndi Lauper, pop juggernaut George Michael, country music GOAT Willie Nelson, rap-metal bandits Rage Against the Machine, grunge pioneers Soundgarden, soul vocalists The Spinners, alt hip-hop pioneers A Tribe Called Quest, garage blues revivalists The White Stripes and scathing singer-songwriter Warren Zevon.
This year, eight (or potentially nine) of the nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are first-time inductees: Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon. The White Stripes and Missy Elliott are unique in that they have been nominated for the Hall of Fame within their first year of eligibility. To be eligible, an artist must have had their first commercial release at least 25 years before the nomination. The reason for this is that the nominating committee now meets and votes in the same year as the induction, instead of the previous year.
In 2023, two bands, Joy Division and New Order, will be eligible for nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Joy Division, a U.K. rock band, who helped punk evolve into post-punk from 1976-1980, had their lead singer, Ian Curtis, tragically commit suicide in 1980. The remaining members regrouped as New Order, added a keyboardist, and then proceeded to produce dance-rock and alternative dance music. Though some may question the decision to induct both bands as one, the Rock Hall has previously inducted bands together, such as Parliament/Funkadelic in 1997 and Small Faces/Faces in 2012. As such, 2023 may be seen as a "make-up year" for artists first released in 1997 or 1998 and in the future, when it comes to Rock Hall nominations, one can subtract 25 from the induction year to determine eligibility.
