Friends of the late comedian Robin Williams shed light on his earlier issues with drug addiction in a new documentary series dubbed "The Dark Side of Comedy."

Allen Stephan, a close friend of Williams said that Robin was highly addicted to cocaine that he couldn't perform without it. Stephan recalled a conversation where Williams urgently sought the drug, saying, "Know anyone with any blow? I have to go on, and I can't go on without any blow." However, Stephan's refusal to provide the substance led Williams to perform without it, signaling a turning point in his relationship with drugs.

Mike Binder, another longtime friend, shared an anecdote from the 1980s when Williams encountered a gram of cocaine. Williams asked for a hit off the drug but returned with an empty container, explaining it was an accident. Binder described Williams as a "monster" when it came to drugs, highlighting the destructive nature of his addiction.

Gina Hecht, Williams' co-star from "Mork and Mindy," remarked on the extreme highs and lows that characterized his life. She noted that when one attains a certain level of fame, drugs are readily accessible, contributing to Williams' struggles.

Howie Mandel, a fellow comedian, revealed that Williams began incorporating cocaine-related humor into his stand-up routines, making light of his own addiction. While audiences laughed, the underlying truth was the seriousness of his substance abuse.

It wasn't until the tragic death of John Belushi in 1982 and the birth of Williams' first son in 1983 that he managed to quit drugs "cold turkey," as stated by his close friend Stanley Wilson.
