Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of Health and Human Services, testified before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday. The hearing was about the large number of resignations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Kennedy’s recent actions related to vaccines.

Kennedy defended his work at the department, which includes the CDC and National Institutes of Health. He said, “If we don’t end this chronic disease, we are the sickest country in the world. That’s why we have to fire people at CDC. They did not do their job. This was their job to keep us healthy”, as stated in the reports.

CDC resignations

Last week, the Trump administration fired Susan Monarez, who had been nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the CDC. After Monarez’s firing, other top officials at the CDC resigned from their positions, according to the report by The Independent.

Democrats criticize Kennedy

Many Democratic senators criticized Kennedy, saying he does not understand public health and has been promoting conspiracy theories. Sen. Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, said, “Republicans on the committee had a chance to prevent the public health train wreck that Mr. Kennedy has engineered”.

Before the hearing, Wyden and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) released a 54-page report highlighting Kennedy’s mismanagement of the department. The hearing highlighted a serious conflict between Kennedy and Democratic senators over leadership at the CDC and vaccine policies, as per the The Independent report.
