Retired FBI officer Greg Shaffer says tightening U.S gun laws is not the answer to stop mass shootings

Greg Shaffer, a retired FBI agent, believes that the tightening of gun laws in the US would be of no use as Americans would never give up their weapons. He believes that schools should increase their security instead.

He believes that the tightening of gun laws is not the answer in the USA, and the government should shift its focus on strengthening school security. He believes that Americans would never give up their guns. An 18-year-old, on Wednesday, opened fire which killed two adults and 19 children at a primary school in Texas.

The retired FBI agent stated that the Americans are a gun culture and that American soil contains more than 400 million weapons. He believes that the government shouldn't confiscate guns as it is not the solution in the USA.

He said that he is aware that many governments worldwide believe that confiscating guns is the correct solution, but it is impossible in America. He said that the Americans need to develop better and innovative ideas as they wouldn't give up their guns, and tightening the security at schools is a better way to go.

Shaffer believes that schools are soft targets, and shootings don't happen at sporting events due to security being good at those places. He suggests that the government should provide adequate security to schools as well. He went on to say that most schools do not have a mechanism for defense in place, and only a few schools have school resource officers (SRO).

School Resource Officers or SROs are law enforcement officers trained and responsible for crime prevention and safety in schools. Shaffer believes that the government must ensure that SROs are present in every American school and at every stage, from grade school to high school.

He said that every school and the educational institution must have trained and armed officers. This is the solution that Shaffer suggests and thinks is better than taking away guns.

The 18-year-old gunman entered the Robb Elementary School with AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and killed three teachers and 19 children. His name was Salvador Ramos, and the responding officers fatally killed him.

It is the deadliest shooting in the US at a primary school since the 2012 Sandy Hook incident that killed six adults and 20 children.
