Renowned producer-cum-director Jules Bass dies at age of 87

Globally renowned producer and director Jules Bass has passed away. He was 87 years old. The news was shared by Bass' publicist Jennifer Fisherman-Ruff.

The publicist informed Entertainment Weekly that Bass breathed his last on October 25. However, the cause of death was not released.

Jules Bass was also a composer and animator. He was best known for his stop-motion and animated TV programmes. Bass, along with his partner Arthur Rankin Jr, developed popular holiday programmes featuring the talents of Fred Astaire, Mickey Rooney and Burl Ives.


The duo developed hit programmes under the company Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment. They first produced the TV series "The New Adventures of Pinocchio" in 1960.

However, they shot to fame following their holiday classics, which include the following projects:

• "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town"
• "Frosty the Snowman"
• "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"
• "Rudolph's Shiny New Year"

These TV programmes were usually based on Christmas songs. The duo earned an Emmy nomination for their 1976 sequel to "The Little Drummer Boy." They also won a Peabody Award for their work on "The Hobbit." While talking about Bass in 2004, Rankin said they complemented each other. Rankin passed away in 2014 at age of 89.

Jules Bass was born in Philadelphia and attended New York University. He stopped directing and producing in 1987, but continued to contribute to the literature. Bass authored several books for children.
