A prominent rabbi was bashed with a backpack by an antisemite just outside a Manhattan synagogue in the heart of New York City. The background of the incident was that the rabbi asked his attacker to simply put his dog on a leash, according to a 'New York Post' report.

Rabbi attacked in front of synagogue

Rabbi Chezky Wolff was just outside the door of his synagogue on West 23rd between 6th and 7th avenues when a dog came near the doors of the synagogue and tried to enter inside. That's when the rabbi tried to stop it from doing so by blocking the doors and then asking the man to at least put the dog on a leash. However, this appeared to trigger the man who called him a 'dirty Jew'. It is not known what followed right after, but the accused assailant then hit Wolff right in the head with his slinging tote bag and knocked off his glasses and yarmulke. The accused wore sunglasses, a blue baseball cap and blue pants, he was then recorded by the rabbi after he started abusing Wolff, calling him a dirty Jew.

"Attacker hiding in an apartment"

After the attack, Wolff tried to pursue the man and demanded an explanation for the abusive and violent behavior, but he seemed unbothered and ducked into an apartment that was resent on the same block as the synagogue, just outside which the entire incident took place.


Police have begun their search for the attacker and Wolff's lawyer has said that the man is hiding in his Chelsea high-rise. Cops and paramedics in the area had quickly reached the scene following the incident but the NYPD did not have complete details as to what went on, according to reports.
